{"id":1748,"date":"2015-08-03T22:10:35","date_gmt":"2015-08-04T02:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/?p=1748"},"modified":"2015-08-03T22:10:35","modified_gmt":"2015-08-04T02:10:35","slug":"road2hope-marathon-training-week-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/?p=1748","title":{"rendered":"Road2Hope Marathon Training Week 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week may have started with a bang, or rather a fall (see last post), but in the end all went smoothly with really no other drama to report. \u00a0When it comes to marathon running, no drama is a very, very good thing&#8230; though it doesn&#8217;t necessarily lead to exciting training recaps. \u00a0Regardless, here is last week in review:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Monday:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>5k<\/strong> trail running in the shade with the boys, then <strong>2k<\/strong> more, ending up in the lifeguard office at a pool to get my bloody (literally) knee cleaned up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1763\" src=\"http:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"FullSizeRender\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender1.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Tuesday:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>10k<\/strong> run around my block &#8211; yes, my rural block, with 500m tacked on, gives me a 10k route. \u00a0I went early, but with a heat advisory it was still stupid hot, especially on the long sections of road with no shade. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t fall though!<\/li>\n<li><strong>5.5k<\/strong> orienteering in the evening. \u00a0Even at 6:00 p.m. the humidex was 39C. \u00a0I did the course with Luke and was more than happy to to remind him to go slowly in the heat. When he was slow, I got to be slow too! \u00a0This was like a very easy going fartlek session (with a lot of sweat!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Wednesday:<\/strong><\/em> off &#8211;\u00a0spent the morning at the beach with the boys<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1762\" src=\"http:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"FullSizeRender\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender-624x468.jpg 624w, https:\/\/raz-family.ca\/RunKristi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FullSizeRender.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Thursday:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>17k LSR<\/strong>. \u00a0I usually drive into Kanata for my long runs, I find I need to be somewhere where I will see other people, find shady routes and where there are bathrooms that don&#8217;t involve avoiding poison ivy. \u00a0Unfortunately the moment I pulled into the parking lot of the rec centre a torrential rain began and showed no sign of ending soon. \u00a0So instead I headed indoors, ran 10k on the dreadmill, then headed outside into what was now blazing sun, with a heat advisory yet again. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t hate the treadmill as much as I thought I would, though I have to ask why would a treadmill be made without a fan??? \u00a0I was trying to figure out how I was getting the control board wet and realized it was from the sweat \u00a0flinging off my arms. \u00a0Lovely. \u00a0I have never split a run before between treadmill and pavement. \u00a0Can&#8217;t say I&#8217;m a fan. \u00a0The moment I started running on pavement my legs felt tired and wobbly. \u00a0It took about 2k to even find a comfortable rhythm, but after that it was a good run.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Friday:<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0off<\/p>\n<p>Saturday:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>6 slow hilly kms<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>2 sets of core exercises<\/strong> on the dock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Sunday:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I was already at my weekly mileage but couldn&#8217;t resist a short<strong> 3k<\/strong> run to test out my new shoes. \u00a0They must have made me feel fast because even on the sandy and hilly road I managed to run progressively faster, finishing my last km at a 5:29 pace.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 sets of core exercises.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>I also was fed up with looking at the lake and not being on it, so I decided to climb into the kayak and see if I could manage paddling with the cast. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t easy, and given the fact I was pretty sore afterwards it may not have been the best activity, but I did manage to do a slow 2kms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Total: 48.5 km of running, 2 km of kayaking and some core exercises.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Thoughts:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have kept the majority of my runs at a comfortable pace. \u00a0There was a time when I would be panicking about this &#8220;easy&#8221; pace, but at the moment I think it has been the best way to start marathon training. \u00a0I feel like I have a solid base; I only had one run where I felt tired, the rest all felt good. \u00a0I am looking forward to each run and mentally I feel like I am doing half of the mileage I am actually completing. \u00a0I am also doing most of my runs in areas with hills, and many of them on sandy\/dirt\/gravel roads. \u00a0Because of this, I find when I do make it to pavement my legs want to go faster without any extra effort from me. \u00a0As of this week, I will start adding strides and try to pick one run where I will pick up the pace a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Marathon day is 3 months from yesterday, still time to slowly add some speed, but I want to do it in a smart and safe way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week may have started with a bang, or rather a fall (see last post), but in the end all went smoothly with really no other drama to report. \u00a0When it comes to marathon running, no drama is a very, very good thing&#8230;
